The Design and Optimization of an Auxetic Patterned Structure
For most of common materials, they have positive Poisson’s ratio. However, some materials exhibits negative Poisson’s ratio and are classified as auxetic materials, which have more benefit since their unique characteristic. The object of this study is to design a smart auxetic structure, whose structure properties can be controlled by the designing parameters so as to be changed to the desired values in the specific application. In our study, the re-entrant honeycomb patterned structure was used as our original design (Figure 1). The auxetic behavior of the re-entrant honeycomb was studied by considering the superposition of the flexure, the stretching and the hinging deformation mechanism. The advantage and disadvantage of current design were identified. An optimized auxetic model will be proposed later.
